This is a typical example of a puritan watch, so named because of the plain aspect of the case and dial, in keeping with the strict code of behavior enforced in England, under the government of Oliver Cromwell, which forbade any open display of wealth. Provenance: Maryatt Collection.

Silver, mounted on a heavy hinged brass dial plate, central silver disc with an engraved cherub standing on an hourglass and pointing the hours with an arrow, innermost hour ring with champlevé radial Roman numerals and half hour divisions with inner champlevé red enamel quarter-hour divisions and outer minute divisions with five-minute Arabic figures, then a small brass ring with a pointer indicating date, and outermost champlevé red enamel 31-day date ring. M. 42 mm, gilt brass, pinned to the dial plate, full plate, Egyptian pillars, fusee and cat-gut, short three-wheel train with 5-leaf pinions, verge escapement, circular steel foliot, later irregular cock pierced and engraved with wild strawberries secured by a screw, worm-gear and pinion mainspring set-up with silver scale plate. Three-body, oval, the lid revealing a compartment, centered by applied varicolored gold symbols of love with a mandolin, a quiver with love arrows and a dove among applied flowers, oval polished frame, applied laurel-leaf garlands, matte border with applied acanthus leaves, the sides similarly decorated with four oval medallions, each with applied multicolored gold symbols of love, marriage and prosperity, applied laurel-leaf garlands above and below, geometrically engraved lower border, the hinged base revealing the musical movement centered with a medallion of applied gold decorated similarly to the one on the lid, with applied green gold laurel-leaf garlands. Skeletonized, gilt brass, fusee and chain, five-wheel train, fly governor, pinned barrel, nest of five bells with five hammers, each with its adjustable banking lever, activation by a push-button at the back of the box. C. Three-body, rectangular with rounded corners, the top with applied varicolored floral and foliate patterns with two butterflies and four cornucopias with flowers, the spring-loaded bird cover finely painted on enamel with a flower bouquet, engine-turned side panels with edges of applied green gold laurel leaf pattern, back panel hinged to reveal key compartment, slide in the front to activate raising of the bird, which rotates, turns its head, opens its beak, flaps its wings and moves its tail. The bird is facing the inside of the medallion which is mirror-polished and concave, enlarging the bird in its reflection, gold engraved grill. Singing bird movement. 74 x 41 mm, rectangular brass, fusee and chain, eight cams and a whistle with sliding piston for the song's modulation. The cams rotate four times per song and lift one step every rotation, allowing a long duration of singing. Cam-controlled raising of the bird medallion and the bird, with five-wheel train finished by a pinion in eccentric bushing to regulate the speed of the opening and closing. The complicated mechanism allows for precision control of the raising of the bird and medallion, and its speed. Stamped ?FR? in an oval on the back of the bird mechanism. Dim. 78 x 52 mm.

Polished steel skeletonized ?Fleur de lis? hands. M. 50 mm, gilt brass, full plate, cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, early lever escapement, gold escape wheel with the lift mostly on the pallets, steel pallet fork with early unusual planes with banking against escape wheel arbor, no draw, three-arm brass balance set under the dial, flat balance spring with a regulator controlled by compensation curb, entire going train jeweled with escapement with endstones, planetary gearing equation mechanism driven from the fusee, interesting setting mechanism with the spring-loaded setting wheel with special engaging mechanism, the connection of the motion train with the equation train is quite ingenious, the motion train is driven from a friction-fit 8-leaf pinion, ?A?. Mounted on the extended third wheel arbor, it drives the canon pinion with 48 teeth to which by means of a small hairspring is set a revolving equation hand 24-tooth wheel which engages with a minute wheel set on the 3rd wheel arbor and consequently with the hour wheel pinion. The equation minute hand displacement is realized by a lever pivoted around the center of the minute wheel and geared by the equation rack controlled by the equation cam, on the free end of the lever is pivoted a reduction planetary wheel which, rotating around the pinion ?A?, turns the equation hand wheel which meshes with its pinion. Extremely fine and unique silver Astronomical watch with dead center-seconds, special chronometer escapement, balance amplitude indication, stop feature, reverse fusee and automatic locking when power goes to zero.

C. Four-body, large, by Pierre Lamet, No. 156, ?Empire?, polished, with molded bezels, silver hinged cuvette. D. Silver, eccentric, set at the top, Roman numerals and outermost minute ring with inner Arabic five-minute figures, silver seconds ring on the border. Frosted and gilt dial plate with glazed aperture for the balance amplitude indication. Blued steel Breguet hands.
