Notes

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) A highly original and important French romantic composer, who had a remarkable gift for orchestration. In 1830 Berlioz? Symphonie fantastique was first performed in Paris. This work, with its recurring basic theme, was noteworthy for its loose form and highly emotional and personal style. That same year Berlioz won the coveted Prix de Rome. During the next decade in Paris he wrote the symphonies Harold in Italy and Romeo and Juliet, the opera Benvenuto Cellini, and a requiem. Berlioz died in Paris in March 1869. His greatness was not truly recognized until the late 19th century.
