Notes

The Panerai Mare Nostrum watch is a reissue of the timepiece that Panerai designed for the Italian Navy in the 1940's, and was intended for use by officers aboard ship. Due to the outbreak of the war, this special navy-styled chronograph with luminous dial never entered into production. Panerai offers it now, based on the original design drawings. This particular model has been realized in a special edition, in agreement with Sylvester Stallone whose signature is on the watch. On the dial of the watch, there is the mark Slytech Panerai (Sly being the well known nickname for Sylvester Stallone) and on the base, Stallone's signature with the inscription: Spec/alEdition. Sylvester Stallone. This watch is No. 31 of this new limited series of 50 examples, although the back of the watch indicates No. 031/500. The dials of the first Panerai watches, in the 1940's, were made with diverse superposed plates fitted with each other: the bottom plate was luminous with "Radiomir" or "Luminor". The dial plate was pierced, so that the numbers were visible through the slots. Panerai very soon noticed that Radiomir was slightly radioactive, so they changed for Luminor. The numerals, indexes and hands of the present model are made with tritium, which has no radioactive effect at all. The "Mignatta", explosive mobile torpedo, the "S.L.C. Silvro a Lenta Corsa" was frequently used by the Italian Navy during WWII. Manned by one or two marines sitting directly on it, they could steer the torpedo close to the enemy objective. Swimming in the water, they could direct the projectile with great precision and let it continue its course to destroy its target. A small boat would then pick up the marines.
