C. Three-body, bassine, made by ?*W?, back cover centered with an engraved coat of arms within an oval, engraved repeated circle and star pattern, bezels engraved with stars. Gilt-metal dust cover. D. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track. Blued steel spade hands. M. 41 mm, fire-gilded full-plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, English-type ruby cylinder escapement with brass escape wheel, plain steel balance with flat balance spring, finely pierced and engraved single-footed cock and backplate furniture, diamond endstone, rack and pinion regulator with silvered dial. Movement signed. Diam. 53 mm.

Justin Vulliamy of swiss origin, Justin Vulliamy settled in London early in the 18th century, becoming associated with Benjamin Gray, of Pall Mall whose daughter he married and with whom he was in partnership from 1730 to 1775, carrying on the business after Gray?s death. Gray was clockmaker to George ii, and the Vulliamy family held the office of clockmaker to the reigning sovereign until the death of Justin?s son Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy in 1854
