Notes

Bernhard Lederer was born in Germany and moved to Switzerland in 2000. His timepieces have been awarded many international prizes, the Middle East Best High-End Jewelled Watch 2006 (BLU Baguette) and the Kuala Lumpur Most Revered Watch prize 2007 (MT3 orbiting triple-axis tourbillon). The full extent of Lederer's expertise and experience has been harnessed to create the Gagarin Tourbillon for Only Watch 2011, a timepiece of truly cosmic proportions. On April 12th, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin made history when he became the first man in space. The Gagarin Tourbillon by BLU celebrates the 50th anniversary of this momentous event. It features a meticulously hand-engraved, three-dimensional relief map of the world in solid gold in the centre of the dial. On the outer rotating ring is the orbital one-minute flying tourbillon turning 360 degrees counterclockwise ? symbolising east ? around the dial in 108 minutes, the time Gagarin took to orbit the earth in his Vostok-1 capsule. The platinum case incorporates an integral rotating magnifying glass allowing more intimate appreciation of the tourbillon and the spectacular dial. Looking through the loupe to the golden map of the world dial lets the viewer imagine what it must have been like to look out of the historic space capsule towards the earth.
