Jean André pinxit, anno 1686. Joh. Leonh. Pomel, Nürnberg, Watchmaker. Extremely rare and magnificent 22-carat gold and painted enamel watch, the second actually known, signed and dated by this eminent maker, Master in 1675. Pierre 1st Huauld's pupil in 1661, also trained by François Legare and Pierre Royaume, associated goldsmiths.

Bassine case, painted overall on enamel, the principal scene depicting Athena and two Cupids; she wears an armour and a helmet and her buckler is decorated with a Gongone's head. The frieze on the band with alternate florets and four small landscapes after Gabriel Perelle's engraving, a farm-house with a tower, painted inside the case. (very slightly restored around the pendant). Plain gold bezel. The original gold pendant being completed with an articulated bow. Enamel dial with Roman numerals, the center with a painted portrait of Diane with her dog. Fine full plate movement with pierced Egyptian pillars, four wheel train, fusee with original chain, verge escapement, three armed plain steel balance, English style cock, pierced and engraved with scrolls and flowers. In good condition. Diam. 42 mm.

Notes

It is worth while to point out that Pierre Huauld, emigrated Huguenot, coming from Blois, where he was apprentice, kept in Geneva part of the technic learned with his French masters. However, he also developped later in Geneva a new stipple painting technic which he has transmitted to his pupil.
