White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track, fiveminute Arabic numerals. Gold "spade" hands. M. 35 mm, gilt brass full-plate with square baluster pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel tree-arm balance, flat balance spring, finely pierced and engraved single-footed cock, diamond endstone, silver regulation disc. Dial and movement signed. Diam. 50mm.

The Continence of Scipio After capturing the city of New Carthage, Cornelius Scipio (born 236 BC.) received as a prize of war a beautiful maiden. Upon learning that she was engaged, he summoned her fiancé and restored her to him unharmed. This act of clemency became legendary symbol of Roman nobility. Scipio was dispatched to fight against the Carthaginians in Spain. He was victorious, winning Rome its 2 Spanish provinces. Scipio became consul in 205 BC at the age of 31.
