James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London, No. 2677, Victorian. Excellent and unusually small gilt brass cased eight day going carriage clock striking hours and quarters on two gongs lever escapement.

The striking train achieving botte hours and quarters. The going fusee with maintaining power. Platform lever escapement, underslung, single roller, pointed tooth wheel, cut bimetallic balance, flat balance spring, ruby endstone to balance cock, strike /silent. Signed on dial and movement. Note: In exceptionally good condition. Original winding key. The presence of a sophisticated compensation balance suggests a date later than might be expected. Unfortunately, Mc Cabe's serial numbers, vis-à-vis dates of manufacture, remain far from being understood. Mc Cabe clocks more often have plain brass balances.
