Robert Molyneux, 30 Southampton Row, London, unnumbered, circa 1840. Remarkable early and highly unusual, wooden cased, eight day going portable timepiece mantel chronometer.

C. Rosewood veneered, glazed four sides and top, front door with irmer silvered rame, dentil top moulding, ornate gilt brass handle, gilt brass bun feet. D. Silvered brass, 24 hours, minutes, seconds arabic numerals, blued steel hands. An inscription reads: " Robt Molyneux, Patented, 30, Southampton, Row, London." M. Brass rectangular, fusee and chair, manntaining power, Eamshaw-type spring-detent platform escapement, seconds-beating balance with Molyneux's auxiliary compensation (patented 1840), blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curves, diamond endstone to balance cock Signed on dial and movement. In very good condition. Dim. 24.5 x 17.5 x 13 cm. excluding handle.

A wonderful collector's item. Note: Many Victorian gentlemen, especially those living in remote estates in the country, were obsessed by the imagined necessity of always knowing the right time. This clock was perhaps made for such a customer.
