Margetts - London, Eight day timekeeper/ James Hatton, London, No. 245, circa 1812. Fine and very rare, small eight day going marine chronometer.

C. Three body mahogany box with external brass handles, glazed upper section with hinged lid. Brass bowl and gimballed suspension. D. Silvered with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Gold "pear" hands. M. 21"', gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain and maintaining power, the back plate relieved for the barrel maintained by a bridge, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement, twoarm compensation balance with poising weights and timing screws, ruby end-stone, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring. Margetts signature on the back plate. Signed and numbered by Hatton on the dial. Dial diam. 57 mm. Box dim. 135 x 125 x 130 mm.

This unusual and probably unique small marine chronometer appears to have been completed by lames Hatton from all ebauche ol an eight clay going pocket clnonometer coming from the workshop ol George Margetts. lames Hatton was apprentice to George Margetts circa 1799, helot(' becoming his partner from 1803 to 1811.
