Sevin, Paris. Made circa 1750. Fine, silver octagonal Butterfield-type pocket sundial and compass in the original fishskin-covered brass fitted box with pin-work monogram.
The folding bird gnomon adjustable for latitudes from 40 to 55 degrees, the dial with scales for 42, 45 and 49 degrees, the reverse engraved with the latitudes of 22 European cities, glazed compass with locking lever. The octagonal brass fitted box overlaid with fishskin with pin-work decoration to the sides, the lid with pin-work monogram ?VB? beneath a coronet. Signed on the reverse. Dim. 68 x 52 mm.
