JOE STRUMMER, LONDON, 1985 LINER NOTES Joe Strummer and Mick Jones were secretly working together again on what would become the soundtrack to Sid and Nancy, the film by Alex Cox. Joe and I were waiting in the street outside Mick's house in London before we went to the studio. I bet Joe we could do a whole photo session and develop the film before Mick even woke up. I shot some Polaroid 35 mm slide film took out my little portable developer and produced the shots right there on the pavement. LINER NOTES These Georgian period houses had once housed the merchant class of Dublin when the British held the country. ALBERT KING, PITTSBURGH, PA, 1979 LINER NOTES This photo was taken in a small, rough and tumble club in Pittsburgh where I saw many great Blues artists. King was a big man and his physical presence alone was impressive. LES PAUL, MAHWAH, NJ, 1995 LINER NOTES This photo was done for the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times, on the occasion of Les' 80th birthday. The shoot was in the basement studio of his home. Among many historic objects and innovations there, he had a larger than life size photo of himself at age 15. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to shoot him in front of it. I wasn't entirely sure he'd like the idea. I did several other photos to be sure I was well covered. I then asked if we could do one more photo; Les Paul at 80 with Les Paul at 15. He said, "wait a minute," and disappeared. He returned with the same guitar (w/a new neck), the same harmonica and the same rack, 65 years later! He loved the idea! It ran very big in the Sunday Times. Many folks think it is a montage created in PhotoShop, but it's a straight, unmanipulated photograph. - Joe Rosen SPECIFICS Shot on a Canon EOS-1, 24-70mm lens, Ilford FP4 film. SIZE 16" x 20" MEDIUM Silver gelatin print. VALUE $800 - $1,100 STARTING BID $625

"DIZZY" GILLESPIE, NEW YORK CITY, 1986 LINER NOTES For a time in the mid '80s the Apollo Theatre would have weekend afternoon shows. I think the admission fee was $6.00. I would hop a train to Harlem, dine at Sylvia's and catch the shows. On this day the place was only about half full. It was all pretty casual. I went down front, crouched and took a few frames. Then suddenly some of the lights went off, leaving only the single spotlight. That's when it all came together and I knew I had my shot. - Joe Rosen SPECIFICS Shot on a Leica M4, 90mm lens, Tri-X film. SIZE 16" x 20" MEDIUM Silver gelatin print. VALUE $800 - $1,100 STARTING BID $625
DAVID "HONEYBOY" EDWARDS, CLARKSDALE, MS, 2011 LINER NOTES "Honeyboy" was the last of the true Delta Blues singers; a contemporary and musical partner of Robert Johnson. The Juke Joint Festival was to be his last public performance. He was 96 at the time and still very sharp. We spoke, reminisced about mutual friends and a portrait session I did with him and others in 2000. As we said goodbye, he grasped and shook my hand very firmly. He was gone a couple of months later. - Joe Rosen SPECIFICS Shot on a Leica M9, 90mm lens, digital. SIZE 16" x 20" MEDIUM Silver gelatin print. VALUE $800 - $1,100 STARTING BID $625

THE DOORS ON BLACK, 1967 LINER NOTES The Doors were among the brighter groups I'd shot at that point. They had a visual orientation and seemed to understand the potential of a good photo session. Initially, there seemed to be a little jealously that Morrison was being put so up front in the photos, but basically the others understood that Jim was the sex symbol and an important visual focus for the band. - Joel Brodsky SIZE 16" x 20" MEDIUM Archival digital print.
